Could this be the most whimsical makeup compact of the midcentury era?
It was the end of Brimfield and I was shopping at one of my favorite antique malls in rural Massachusetts when I saw it out of the corner of my eye: a chunky, perfectly round, beautifully retro 8-ball with a hinge on the side. I almost gasped: it absolutely couldn’t be anything other than a makeup compact.

As a collector, I’ve come across some incredible vintage makeup compacts and accessories over the years. I’ve collected at least 100 examples ranging from darling to daring and everything in-between. But this!!! The Vintage 1950s 8-Ball compact is truly different. The one I have is not signed, but many listings online attribute the design to either Wadsworth or Henriette; both mid-century brands that were making novelty makeup compacts at the time. What’s most amazing about it is that it’s fully functional and fully weird. Unlike many of the compacts I’ve collected over the years, it’s not overtly feminine or categorically pretty. Instead, it’s whimsically weird and a little bit dark. Rather than a classic gold case with a dainty design, it’s heavy, black, and over-the-top.

It has a fun undertone for thrill-seekers and darers. It’s modeled off of the Magic 8-Ball toy that gained popularity in the 1950s. The slang phrase “behind the eight ball” which first started appearing around the 1920s in newspapers meant being in trouble or at a disadvantage (referring to a pool position where the black eight ball obstructs the cue ball so you can’t see). By the time the toy came around, the 8-ball was associated with luck and fortune telling. Right now, we all could use a little bit more luck. I see 8-balls, dice, playing cards and other classic game motifs as a potential trend that we may start seeing everywhere soon. There’s a reason why the Dior Gambler bag looks so good in 2026. If you want to add a Vintage 1950s Wadsworth 8-Ball compact to your collection, you can find them here, here, here or here.
This compact is a metaphorical oracle and I think that’s part of what makes it so special.
