Would You Wear Vintage Solid Gold Nails?

Remembering the vintage solid gold nails trend of the 1970s and 1980s.

In the bold, bright world of secondhand solid gold, one collective fascination holds strong. Enter, vintage solid gold nails! A niche accessory that truly stands out.

With gold cost at historic heights and more people than ever before shopping vintage gems, there’s a lot coming to the market right now. Solid gold nails are a weirdly satisfying relic that has been popping up from some of our favorite various online sellers lately. Surreal, opulent and perfectly gaudy.

They’re just like they sound: press on finger nail tips made of real, solid gold. Usually rendered in 14K gold, they are either sold as a single nail, or sometimes as a whole pack (but lots of sellers opt to break them up). You simply apply a special nail glue or super glue and wear it.

A lot of them are designed to be worn just on the pinky. (Insert jokes about illicit activities here). But today…so chic. So much better than a pinky ring. Some of them come with diamonds. At the moment, you can find most of them for under $200 for a single nail. There are also more affordable versions that are gold filled or plated, but most of these have a more matte finish. Ebay and Etsy are the best places to shop them, but just make sure to look over the listings properly because there are many listed as vintage that are actually new. The vintage ones have a certain design quality and patina that is just so much better.

Do you trust yourself enough to wear a solid gold nail without it falling off? This trend has a very Schiaparelli, or Claude Lalanne coded aesthetic, with a much more wearable twist, of course. If you’ve ever worn one, especially in the 1970s or 1980s, please drop a comment.
