2021: The Year of the Hat?

Stop what you’re doing, because you need a hat. 2021 is now official the year of the hat. The pandemic has changed a lot, for a lot of people. When it comes to fashion, there’s also been a major shakeup not just to the system of never-ending shows and the unforgiving market calendar but even right down to the way we shop and the way we dress.

Many have been forgoing the normal fast fashion shops they love in favor of shopping small, sustainable and independent designers. And with that, many have some to find their own personal style, trading in jeans and button-downs for more expressively loud printed pants and fun dresses. It doesn’t take much to realize that accessories are heading in a more maximal direction — scroll through any fashion-centric instagram and you’ll see stacks upon stacks of La Manso rings, colorful nails and chunky bracelets.

The trend of layered, chunky colorful jewelry is one that began in 2020 and has bled over into 2021. But what we think is really going to become possibly the most major look of all this year is the hat. That’s right: from caps to wide-brims and bucket hats, we’re started to see more and more fashion people embrace the hat, and we’re calling 2021 the year of the hat.

We have a couple theories of why 2021 is the year of the hat. Take a look at Emma Brewin: the UK based designer makes luxe fux fur hats in fun colors like lime green loved my Rihanna. These have become a staple for lots of people who love indie brands. Then, there’s been a slew of other cool hat brands that recently launched: like PardoHats, the Spanish brand making insanely chic felt berets in childhood-like patterns.

Others have been wearing fun, maximalist outfits with Yankees or other logo ball caps. It makes the look feel more ironic and casual.

Another reason why 2021 is the year of the hat? Gossip Girl is making a return to HBO, with a brand new series and new characters. The OG Gossip Girl literally defined an entire generation of hats (and headbands) through characters like Blair Waldorf, Jenny Humprey and Serena Vanderwoodsen, who each wore their own kind of hat well. We can’t help but feel nostalgic for the original style of the show and a bit of fun to be had with fashion.

At the end of the day, at hat can hide your hair — you don’t have to do much with it and your outfit will instantly feel updated. It’s also just another fun accessory to try during a crazy time when fashion lends itself to be experimental.
