Prada Spring 2003

Over two decades later, nothing feels as good as Prada spring 2003.

Chunky ski goggles, minimalist art chic ring handbags and matte beading galore: the details of Prada’s spring 2003 collection live on in a way that enchants generations years later. Something about the early internet coded color palette of cold white, acid green and steely blues combined with the hyper-human features of embellished jewelry, jacquard fabrics and radically simplistic silhouettes feels firmly right now.

If we’re talking statement bags, Prada’s spring 2003 campaign belongs in the dictionary definition. The stunning metal ring was outsize and unique, suspending a chic, rectangular ostrich bag bedecked with large colorful plastic beads.

One of the best things about the most iconoclastic work from Mrs. Prada is that it’s often impossible to place. Spring 2003 is both futuristic and vintage; sporty and couture, surreal and strikingly everyday.

The accessories from the collection are some of the most coveted and easy to find, if you know where to look. Those necklaces feel innately Italian in craft and quite forward-thinking in their essence. Only a few years later would the world witness the statement necklace renaissance. The chunky beading technique also traversed jewelry and worked its way into the clothing, completely covering those perfectly stiff little shift dresses and skirts. It is deeply girly, artsy and whimsical, but also very contradictory. In a nutshell: very reminiscent of Mrs. Prada’s own personal style.
