The last time the Dover Street Market New York archive sample sale took place was in 2016. Dubbed Super-Market-Market, the lines were epic and the deals were even better, with archival and runway pieces from Comme des Garçons, Tao and Junya Watanabe alongside other brands sold at Dover Street Market, from Miu Miu to Raf Simons. The sale was held in a massive warehouse space with art installations and giant totes. On the racks hung glittering arrays of rare pieces seen on the runways next to rows and rows of shoe boxes piled high and shopping carts full of perfumes. And now, the archive sample sale will be returning to New York, under the name Market Market Monolith Magic, this June.
Both Dover Street Market and Comme des Garçons New York started teasing it on Instagram, confirming the archive sample sale will be happening June 8th – 11th at 866 United Nations Plaza, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
It makes perfect sense that the Dover Street Market New York Sample Sale would return in 2023. It finally feels like we’re out of the pandemic–and there must be lots of pent up stock. Plus, Dover Street Market London kicked off its own version of the archive sample sale, Market Market 2023, in May 2023. As seen on TikTok, people were arriving to the sale bright and early, waiting up to five hours for finds up to 80% off.
The New York version of the sale will include over two floors of inventory spread over 60,000 square feet.
We’re so excited. Rarely does an archive or sample sale of this type come around. There’s something to be said about the prices, but also the selection. Rare runway pieces from CDG brands such as Junya Watanabe and Tao are hard enough to find; imagine being able to shop so many in one space.
We’re most looking forward to the freaky good finds from Noir Kei Ninomiya. In 2016, we picked up studded and snakeskin Junya Watanabe boots, Comme des Garçons Girl polka dot skirts and sequined Comme des Garçons boots from 2001, but also saw plenty of limited runway pieces from Comme des Garçons brands for 70% off. If it’s anything like the 2016 sale, prices will get better near the end of the sale too.
