In Praise of Everything Oversized

We’ve seen more than a few seasons of the runway indulging in the new wave of bodycon. Skintight, barely there and underwear are everywhere, which makes anything oversized feel a little bit like a luxury. Have you tried wearing jeans so big you’re basically swimming in them? Allow me to introduce you to the (unfortunately now sold out everywhere) Vaquera Baby Jeans, one of my all time favorite pairs of pants. Have you ever tried a bomber jacket so massive it trails along the floor and doesn’t allow anyone at all to sit next to you? One of my best purchases of 2022 was a Junya Watanabe coat that swallowed me up and spit me out as an eclectic goth emo princess from the future.

Let everything oversized take you on a journey through a brave new world where fabrics graze the floor and nothing else matters.

We saw the approach to bigger is better just a little bit on the runway for fall 2023, especially at Marni and Marc Jacobs, where proportions were kicked up a notch to clownish, balloon-like symphonies. There’s something pretty powerful about wearing big, big clothes. The idea of taking up space is there, sure, but it also speaks so deeply to a different kind of comfort. It’s protective and provocative all at once.

And let me let you in on a little something interesting: the most exciting oversized pieces are the basics–jeans, shirts, bomber jackets–when taken apart and blown up, there’s really nothing better. Shop our favorite oversized pieces below.
