The Review: Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick

This is our unfiltered review of the Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick.

If you’ve tried anything by Huda Beauty, you know the brand consistently delivers products that are wearable, covetable and gorgeous season after season. So when I heard the brand was releasing a new foundation dubbed the #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick, I knew I had to review it.

Now usually, I’m not the biggest fan of foundation sticks. They can be heavy, oily and just all around bad for the breakout averse. But hear me out, Huda Beauty is revolutionized the foundation stick as we know it.

“When I want to go for a fuller coverage I usually have to compromise on a natural-looking finish, so I decided to design a foundation that would give you naturally flawless skin but with the look of a filter,” Huda said in the press release.

#FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick comes in 39 shades (nine of the shades are new shades re-worked from original Huda foundation shades). A couple of the shade range options go from from Vanilla, Panna Cotta, and Milkshake for fair skin tones, Toasted Coconut, Latte and Beignet for medium skin tones, and Coffee Bean, Hot Fudge and Lava Cake for rich skin tones.

Upon first using the #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick, I was happy to discover that the packaging is surprisingly lightweight and modern. As you roll it up it makes little satisfying clicks. The foundation itself comes in an angular, rectangular flat shape, which is perfect if you like to contour and use multiple shades for different areas. It’s easier to create different widths of application as opposed to if the product was packaged in a round shape, for example.

I usually wear the lightest shades of any foundation. I received the shades Angel Food 110N, Vanilla 120B and Panna Cotta 130G and thought the Angel Food shade was best suited for my skin tone. But I would also try the others in the future and perhaps may even choose a different shade for the spring/summer, or even to do a bit of contouring even though the differences in color is extremely subtle.

As for the #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick finish, it’s nowhere near as heavy as I imagined it to be. If you’ve used Hourglass Cosmetics’ Foundation Stick, this is lighter and more matte. It is shockingly lightweight and natural — if you’re trying to cover dark spots, this might not be the foundation for you. But it gives a beautiful, even finish that looks naturally perfected. I would call it a medium coverage foundation. However, this is also a foundation that you can layer. Once you apply and buff out with a sponge or brush, you can apply a second layer to get more coverage. Or even a third layer, for example. According to the brand, the idea was to recreate the brand’s #FauxFilter Full Coverage Matte Foundation into a lighter, more natural finish that acts as an Instagram filter for your face.

As for application, Huda Beauty suggests applying the #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick with two other new launches from the brand – the new Water Jelly Hydrating Primer (I love this, it’s lighter than a serum and has no scent. The tackiness goes away within one minute) and a dual-ended foundation brush (also incredible – no streaks and feels less messy and greasy than a sponge). This is how Huda herself recommends applying the product:

Apply one pump of Water Jelly Hydrating Primer to clean skin. Wait 30 to 60 seconds for the hydrating ingredients to absorb into your skin while the activating priming ingredients provide optimal makeup grip. Then follow by applying #FauxFilter Skin directly onto the skin and buff out with your favorite sponge or brush – the more product you use, the higher the coverage. For extra coverage, apply an extra layer to areas that need it and blend (don’t worry, the formula stays light and natural-looking while also giving a filter finish).

Laying down the first layer of #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick – you can see I have redness and texture issues
#FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick final application in low natural indoor light – no concealer worn
#FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick in indoor studio light (shows more flaws) – – no concealer worn
#FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick in natural, low indoor light with a full natural face of makeup (brows, shadow, mascara, lips, blush, highlight) – – no concealer worn

I applied the #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick using the above technique and loved the result. The foundation took care of my redness and texture issues and still looked extremely natural. It’s not matte and it’s not too shiny, it just looks like skin, but better.

Earlier this year, even before the pandemic, I made the switch to wearing lighter makeup. I usually just wear Glossier’s Futuredew with one of my favorite concealers on my T-zone to combat my redness. #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick also feels lightweight (actually less dewy and wet than my usual Glossier combo, which I love).

The #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick will definitely be my go-to for now. I love that the finish and it has enough coverage so that I also don’t have to wear concealer. Obviously, the final finish also depends on what skincare you use beforehand. I like to use a lightweight moisturizer, serums and even an oil so I end up with a more dewy finish. If you’re like me with an extensive morning skincare routine and you want a more matte look, you may want to use a powder with this foundation. Would you try it?
