There’s no denying the fact that Jean Paul Gaultier runway shows consistently bring a sense of wonder and enchantment. That was particularly the case in the early 2000s, when it felt like the designer held no topic or subject off-limits. There’s another image of Natalia Vodianova from Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2003 that also achieved a sort of viral fame. In it, the same insanely long pink hair is pilled atop her head in a topknot with a matching wide pink scarf wrapped around her forehead.
Rather interestingly, Gaultier was inspired by Alexander Calder’s mobile sculptures. The show itself also opened with circus acrobats twirling in the air on rings, and many of the clothes, striped tees, ultra-wide brimmed hats, tutus, knee-high boots, bikini tops and polos and button-downs turned around and repositioned into new forms and shapes looked like they pulled references from pirates, Victorian style and the ’70s.
