Of all the bountiful bags in the Miu Miu universe, the clutches, top-handle delicacies and stunning little carry-alls of spring 2008 were the kind of once-in-a-lifetime fashion finds that one never forgets. Miuccia Prada described the collection as “life as theater, and all the clichés of how people represent themselves in the world,” and the references to uniforms, costumes and heavenly, exaggerated fashion tropes were all there. But the bags! Miu Miu’s spring 2008 bags were the stuff fashion dreams were made of. Think: patchwork dragonfly and spider clutches with deliciously humble cord crossbody straps and perfect brass handles. The creatures were crafted in a marquetry style, with python, metallic leather, lush suede and buttery soft lambskin collaged together. Colorful, surreal and packed full of endless personality, they were likely only produced in small batches, as they are incredibly hard to find on the secondhand market today. The spider and dragonfly bags sort of have the energy of folksy 1970s leather patchwork fashion, done with the unique approach to color and pattern that we so love from early to mid 2000s Miu Miu. Black, navy blue and silver on one spider clutch has an Art Deco vibe, while the stunning faded pinks and purples of the dragonfly feel effortlessly 1980s and overtly girlish; purely for the female gaze.

Aside from the bug bags of Miu Miu spring 2008, the dumpling-shaped patchwork python beauties also stood out. Miu Miu and Prada, in those days especially, felt like they were totally in conversation with one another, and it’s so easy to see the otherworldly, ethereal qualities of the 2008 Prada fairy collection creeping into Miu Miu’s spring 2008 bags too. Mirroring the rainbow metallic harlequin prints seen on dresses, one of our favorite bags in the collection was a simple clutch utilizing patchwork rainbow leather to recreate the triangular pattern, finished with a brass handle. Red, green, yellow, purple; it’s over-the-top in the best way.

Kirsten Dunst starred in the fabulous campaign, touting oversized patchwork harlequin bags that stood in as the more commercially-available bag options from the collection. Interestingly, the shoes (like the dragonfly gladiator sandals and teacup heels) from this collection are often cited and collected by archive fashion collectors. But today, Miu Miu spring 2008 bags feel like the kind of fashion folklore we rarely come across.
