There comes a time in every person’s life when they first encounter the work of Molly Goddard: big, bulbous, voluminous and above all else: brilliantly bold. Molly Goddard’s fall 2024 collection explored all the things we already know and love about the brand but punched it up with brilliant fuchsias paired with striking scarlet reds, spotty dot prints and those delicious combinations that she does so well: cozy knit plus ginormous tulle skirt equals paradise. Let there be tulle! And let it be huge!
The show notes called out “shapes on top of shapes; garments combining—pulling in, pushing out, smushing. Matching textures, blobs on blobs, two become one,” and that we definitely saw.” Goddard took the idea of 1960s Cristobal Balenciaga and Christian Dior gowns and abstracted and elasticized them into wonderlands of cartoonish proportions that we so crave.
London style is alive and well and Molly Goddard is fueling the fire with an instantly recognizable aesthetic with major impact. There’s something so nostalgic about her work, but also this collection—the distinct pairings of Western shirts and embellished jeans or baby doll-like candy confections of red and pink tulle piled high, higher, highest. It speaks deep to the part of our soul that idolizes old Miu Miu and the odd eccentricities of Mrs. Prada. Dressing up for dressing up’s sake!
