If you’re looking for one way to add a little something extra to your wardrobe this spring, the immediate, most impactful answer is red tights. Think about it: red tights have been worn by some of the most iconic style icons of all time, from Ugly Betty to Anna Karina.
Lately, it really seems like you can’t walk around New York City without seeing red tights either. They were also everywhere on the runway for fall 2023, from Isabel Marant to Saks Potts and Miu Miu. The red tights at Miu Miu were a personal favorite of mine–deliciously sheer and perfectly off-kilter in color, they alluded to the early aesthetic and way of thinking about hues that we so love Miuccia Prada for. But even so, Chanel, Hermes and Gucci also tapped into the red tights obsession.

Some of my favorite ways to wear red tights are in ways that feel so wrong. Like, with a knee-high or thigh-high boot in black or gold over thick, juicy opaque tights. I like red tights that either feel perilously sheer, or so thick they look like leggings. One great thing about red tights too: the more experimental you get with color, the better. Green, purple, blue and yellow all look amazing with red tights–it’s vivid and in-your-face. Pairing them with a sheer skirt a la Gucci or Miu Miu is also very fun.
