This season’s fashion month kicked off in New York and will be taking us on a journey through four cities, as per usual. Ahead, our curation of the top Spring 2027 trends, straight from the runways.
We love a trend, even better if it’s an early prediction. As the spring/summer 2027 collections release, we’re most enchanted with the bounty of new ideas and handful of moments that feel specifically tied to the beautiful chaos that is the current fashion system. The spring 2027 trends reflect our current culture, refracted through some of the most unique designers of our times. Layered Up, Beautiful Mess
Designers are obsessed with capturing the idea of natural, authentic, personal style, and it’s coming through in interesting ways. One of the most peculiar representations is what we’ll call the beautiful mess: casual pieces layered up and styled in a way that looks like they were put together with haste, and most importantly, (this is key) TASTE. The styling is fully intentional to give the effect of natural curation. Take, for example, the sweaters (or belts meant to mimic this) tried around the waist at Coach, Rachel Comey and Brandon Maxwell. Taking things a step further, fabrics were twisted and subverted to look as if they were messily layered or trapped over each other at Area and Ashley Williams. Long live the mess!
Wild, Dream-Like Statement Pants
You’ve met the big dress, the over-the-top skirt, et al. Now comes that statement pant (and short). We’ve been working up to his moment for quite some time by way of culottes and balloon pants but spring 2027’s pants are predictably even more extreme. Think: pants from your wildest dreams. Luar presented its Christopher Street Columbus collection and quite literally gave us trunk hose; versions of pleated breeches inspired by Tudor era dress (!!!). Brandon Maxwell delivered the most perfect pairs of culottes with beautiful box pleats that moved like a cinematic day dream. We are sure to see more out-of-this-world pants as the collections debut. Zoe Gustavia Anna Walen is another brilliant example of a designer who is giving pants a rare kind of attention, with swirling panels of corset lacing and unusual double waistbands with mixed prints. Sandy Liang showed us a pair of track pants that were printed airbrush style with “Versailles”. After much focus on skirts and dresses, technical, special-feeling pants feel new.
Mid-2000s Mall Brands Are So Back
Fashion is cyclical (duh). After a long obsession with the ’90s and Y2K era, fashion skirted through indie sleaze and twee, so obsessed with the sub-cultural aspect of that very, very particular part of the 2000s. But we’re now seeing something that feels new, specific to the spring 2027 season. It really feels like mid-2010s commercial (you could call them mall brands, but some of them swing higher-end) fashion brands are having a revival. Think: 7 For All Mankind (which is enjoying a re-brand) alongside Tommy Hilfiger (which just had a celebrity-studded, blowout show). DVF and Proenza Schouler, which respectively both have new young creative directors, feel like they’re back in full swing and had some of the best collections of the season in New York. Granted these two skew a bit higher-end than typical mall brand, they fit the aesthetic, era and vibe. Beyond this, I saw multiple guests wearing Ralph Lauren polos at shows. Many of these brands were all giants and kings of the 2005 – 2014 era before they kind of faded away from the fashion industry’s collective conscious . There is something to this: I believe this will spur more mid-2010s, commercial (some might use the term “basic”) fashion brand revivals as well as an interest in collecting the original archives from the very specific eras of these types of brands. Recession chic.
Fashion That Wants You to Touch Grass
The fashion world frequently pulls from nature, this we know. But at a time when it feels like we’re glued to our screens more than ever (and AI is being forced into our lives from every nook and cranny) there’s something refreshing about the designers who are geeking out over greenery. Thom Browne devoted his spring 2027 collection to A Bug’s Life, full of lady bug shell-shaped dresses and the best buggy shoes we’ve ever seen. Collina Strada took guests outside the city to Storm King, models dancing barefoot in the grass and her signature whimsigoth dresses in beautiful shades of yellow-green and purple. Pipenco showcased stunning, monumental knit creations inspired by Muma Pădurii, or “the Mother of the Forest” in Romanian folklore, outside in a green courtyard as the wind was picking up for a storm. Jane Wade’s model carried a tent-like umbrella and another one wore a huge camping backpack.
Print Clashing
Good old print clashing: it’s not a trend if you’re a maximalist, but it’s always a good thing to see on the runway because it feels less try-hard than a matching set or even a great color-blocking moment. It’s intrinsic at newly named creative director Henry Zankov’s new vision for DVF and at his own label, where prints (and sequins) collided. Likewise, Proenza Schouler mixed and matched animal prints. Elsewhere, some of the most stunning looks at Anna Sui mixed different sized florals, layered up with bunches of jewelry and fur details for a textural wonderland effect. And who could forget the amazing mixed stripes, gingham checks and plaids of Thom Browne and Tanner Fletcher?
