How to Wear Colored Mascara

As the days go by and we increasingly stay inside, there’s been one beauty trend that’s been lifting my spirits: colored mascara. But you may be wondering how to wear colored mascara, given it’s a look that’s definitely not for the faint of heart.

I’ve had on-again off-again love affairs with colored mascara, but something about right now makes it feel extremely modern. It’s easy to apply, makes nearly everyone do a double take and is just about as bold as it comes when it gets down to making a strong beauty statement.

Back in March during Fashion Week, I was experimenting with a bright pink mascara by Dior but the beauty of colored mascara is that you can choose almost any hue. I also have a bright white mascara from Anna Sui which is unlike any other product I’ve ever tried: I’m truly obsessed.

Take it from me, the easiest way to wear colored mascara is to layer with a thick base coat/primer, especially if you have darker lashes. This will allow you to get a good grip so the color really saturates the base and ends of your lashes, as well as cover up some of your natural lash color as lash primers usually come with a light pigment too.

As for how to wear colored mascara with the rest of your makeup, you can basically pull off any look.

If you want a really stark, editorial look, colored mascara looks really amazing with no other eye makeup and a strong, bold lip drenched in saturated red or glossy shocking pink.

In my photo above, I mixed and matched a bright turquoise liner alongside a chunky glitter. I like playing with bright eyeliners and in-your-face glitters because they give off a strong ’90s vibe.

Last but not least, you can’t fail with a classic black cat eye. Done in a liquid or felt tip liner, it pairs perfectly with colored lashes as it defines the eye shape and still gives you that little bit of black you might be craving if you’re the type that wears black mascara everyday.

Another important thing to keep in mind when wearing colored mascara? Some of the colors (red, green, purple) can bring out the imperfections in your complexion, so remember to use concealer and/or foundation where needed. If wearing a pink or red-toned colored mascara, you can also use a red-complexion corrector. I love Dr. Jart for this.

Last but not least, if you feel like colored mascara is too bold, start off with a softer, more natural color like brown or dark red. Not only will it enhance your eye color, it will make you do a double take because of the beautiful, subtle color.
